Xavier Henry injury: Lakers forward out for season with torn Achilles

The Los Angeles Lakers will be without the services for the season of another player after forward Xavier Henry ruptured his left Achilles tendon in Monday’s practice and underwent surgery on Tuesday, according to Eric Picnus of the LA Times.

Henry suffered the injury on a non-contact play during a 3-on-3 drill shortly after the 23-year-old heard a pop sound in his ankle.

“He just made a move, like most guys do when they mess up their Achilles. Nobody hit him or anything like that,” he said. “He went down and pretty much said to us that he heard a pop. We helped him in the locker room. Kobe [Bryant] and [Carlos] Boozer are in there with him, but obviously, he was devastated.”

It had been a difficult road back to recovery after playing just 43 games last season, where he averaged 10.0 points and 2.7 rebounds, due to a torn ligament in his left wrist and a cartilage abnormality in his right knee. He had surgery to repair both injuries in early August.

He also underwent Regenokine treatment in October because of persisting issues with his right knee. He had continued to struggle to regain strength and the explosiveness this season that he had prior to the injury. Henry had just nine appearances averaging 2.2 points on .231 field goal percentage in 9.6 minutes per game.

He had signed a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum with Los Angeles this past offseason, and can be dealt after Dec. 15 or waived.

This now leaves the four-year veteran at a crossroads in his career with much uncertainty surrounding if he can return to the form prior to the injuries.
