This bout has long been planned for WSOF 22 as President Rey Sefo said on “The MMA Road Show with John Morgan” that the “main event for [WSOF 22] will be Palhares vs. Jake Shields. That has to happen in Vegas.”
With the Nevada State Athletic Commission approving the event to take place at Planet Hollywood AXS Theater on Tuesday, it looks like the long-anticipated bout will finally happen.
Shields-Palhares is maybe the best fight WSOF can put on. Start work on that leg lock defense, Shields. Or invest in wheelchair companies.

Palhares and Shields, easily the two best fighters in the WSOF’s welterweight divison and possibly in the promotion, have seemed on a collision course since Shield’s entrance to the World Series of Fighting.
Instead, Rey Sefo and Vice-president/match-maker Ali Abdel-Aziz have allowed the hype to build as each fighter has picked up a pair of first-round wins in the organization. Shields bested Ryan Ford at World Series of Fighting 14 by rear-naked choke and Brian Foster at World Series of Fighting 17 by neck crank. Palhares boasts a slightly more impressive WSOF resume, beating Steve Carl for the championship and Jon Fitch in his first title defense, both in under two minutes.
The event is expected to air on NBCSN.
