NFL: 49ers bench Colin Kaepernick, start Blaine Gabbert
It hasn’t quite been the bounce back season for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, which took another step backward after he was benched for Sunday’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons for backup Blaine Gabbert.
The 28-year-old has struggled this season as he has passed for 1,615 yards with just six touchdown passes, five interceptions, and five fumbles through the first seven games. This includes throwing no touchdowns in five games, completing over 60 percent of his passes twice, and recording lower than a 45.0 quarterback rating four times.
All of his unreliability has only been heightened by the team’s overall disappointment this season holding a 3-6 record at the midway point. That said, the 49ers were still able to scratch out a win against the Falcons on with Gabbert at the helm of the offense, and are expected to keep him as the starter after the team’s bye week.
San Francisco has stated that they are still committed to Kaepernick for the long-term, but with his contract on a year-by-year basis it makes his return next season seem unlikely. There is much speculation that he could be dealt in the offseason if so there will be plenty of team’s interested in acquiring his services.
