USA Ranked #1 in World After Winning Rugby Sevens Series on Home Turf

Las Vegas, NV–The USA Sevens Eagles won their first Rugby Sevens Series Cup Final of the year with a resounding 27-0 victory over Samoa on home ground in Las Vegas.

The USA’s championship ended a four-match finals losing streak.

Ben Pinkelman scored twice (2′ and 13′) and was awarded Player of the Final for his efforts. Matai Leuta (4′), Madison Hughes (8′) and Maceo Brown (15′) notched the other USA tallies.

Earlier in the day, the Eagles defeated powerhouse rugby side New Zealand 24-19 in their semifinals clash. The two teams were tied for first place with 76 points each prior to the start of the Las Vegas competition.

The Eagles gained 22 points and moved atop the rugby sevens series standings. New Zealand, with their third place finish in Las Vegas, slid down a notch with 93 points.

The Rugby Series Sevens heads to Vancouver, BC Canada next weekend. All of the matches can be viewed live across ESPN networks.
