NBA Summer League tournament beginning to take shape

The tournament to crown the second champion of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas took shape after the conclusion of the preliminary round of games on day five. The Chicago Bulls will go into the tournament as the No. 1 seed and receive a first round bye along with seven other teams.

The Bulls, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Washington Wizards all finished undefeated to take seeds 1-4 respectively. On the other end of the standings, you have the winless Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets and Minnesota Timberwolves in seeds 21-24 respectively. These teams’ early play could be key to where they end their tournaments as the bottom seeds with a much harder and longer road to victory.

The Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers, New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings all accumulated 2-1 records to bring in the 5-8 seeds respectively. All of these teams secured their position on quarter points and have proven that they can play well throughout their entire games.

The Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs all finished with a 2-1 record as well, but were not fortunate enough to be seeded high enough to earn a first round bye. They fell into the 9-12 seeds and should not have a difficult time moving forward, but will not have the added benefit of rest time.

The last eight teams, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, D-League Select, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors and Los Angeles Clippers all finished with 1-2 records to fall into the 13-20 seeds. Few of these teams showed much life and will have a hard time moving forward as they found it difficult to mesh together.

Overall, the rest of the event should be a competitive affair as many teams showed that they have what it takes to compete, but many will run into a vast array of problems. The first few games have also seen the breaking out of many young stars from recent drafts that should be able to make a big impact come the regular season.
