NBA Free Agency 2016: Kevin Durant to Warriors, Pau Gasol to Spurs

USA Today Sports

Two Western Conference powerhouses got stronger by adding high-profile free agents, according to reports.

Kevin Durant announced his decision to sign with the Golden State Warriors via the Players’ Tribune. He called it one of the most difficult times in his life, as a basketball player and man. Durant is expected to sign a two-year, $54.3 million contract, according to ESPN.

Durant leaves behind nine years in Oklahoma City. The former MVP came a game from defeating the Warriors in last season’s Western Conference Finals. Golden State set the record for regular season wins last season.

A day later, the San Antonio Spurs reportedly agreed to a deal with Pau Gasol. According to ESPN, Gasol is finalizing a two-year deal worth more than $30 million. He joins a San Antonio team that finished second in the Western Conference last year.

Gasol’s resume includes two championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. Gasol spent the last two seasons with the Bulls. He averaged 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds for Chicago last year, but the Bulls missed the playoffs.

With Gasol and Durant off the market, most of the big-name NBA free agents are gone. That means teams will now look to fill out their rosters with serviceable players.
