The San Diego State Aztecs had a special homecoming as they thrashed the Nevada Wolf Pack 67-43 in front of their home crowd. Viejas Arena was louder than ever as they amped up the noise to honor the seniors JJ O’Brien, Dwayne Polee, Aqeel Quinn, and Ryan Staten for their tireless dedication to the program that has seen great success capturing their fourth Mountain West Conference title in 5 years.
The Aztecs played excellent defense shutting down the Wolf Pack’s star big man AJ West. The Aztecs held him to just five points the entire game. The Wolf Pack seemed very out of sync and irritated as they only converted on 29.5% of their field goals, largely to do with the smothering defense of the Aztecs. The infamous San Diego State student section “The show” was also a factor as they poked and prodded at the Wolf Pack by chanting with their false countdowns and chants of “air ball”.
The three seniors JJ O’Brien (9 points), Dwayne Polee(12 points), and Aqeel Quinn(12 points) seized their night as they combined for 33 points. But it seemed like each of them brought their own flair to the game. O’Brien demonstrated his high basketball IQ by making smart passes and being in position on defense to prevent easy baskets. Polee made his presence felt on defense a massing a game-high five steals and Quinn orchestrated the offense brilliantly posting up a game-high five assists.
Yes, last night was about the seniors but lets give a few moments to congratulate junior forward Skylar Spencer on his achievement. He set the all-time record for blocked shots in San Diego State school history with 217.
All in all the Aztecs had a pretty good season finishing (24-7, 14-4) on the season. Now they will gear their focus towards the Mountain West Conference Tournament next week. They are tied for first place with Boise State but because Boise owns the tie breaker the Aztecs will be the number 2 seed.
