Lakers sign Wayne Ellington

The Los Angeles Lakers on Monday announced that the team had signed free agent veteran guard Wayne Ellington, according to Yahoo Sports.

Since being selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2008 draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Ellington has played for four different teams. He spent the first three years of his career with Minnesota before signing with the Memphis Grizzles , and was traded mid-season to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He spent last season as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, and for his career has averaged 6.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists.

This offseason he was also a part of a major blockbuster trade in June that dealt him along with Shane Larkin, Jose Calderon, Samuel Dalembert and two 2014 second-round picks, to the New York Knicks in exchange for Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton. He was later traded again in August from the Knicks to  the Sacramento Kings, in a deal that sent he, Jeremy Tyler and a 2016 second round pick, in exchange for Quincy Acy and Travis Outlaw. Sacramento would later waive the five-year veteran in early September, which officially made him an unrestricted free agent.

Ellington played his best under new Lakers head coach Byron Scott when he traded to the Cavaliers during the 2012-13 season, where he averaged career best in points (10.4), field goal percentage (.439), minutes (25.9), and starts (17) in 38 games played with the team.

His addition to Los Angeles now pushes their roster to 14 players under contract prior to the start of training camp next Monday. Ellington is a 3-point specialist, whose outside shooting ability could help stretch the floor in Scott’s offense with the Lakers this upcoming season. However, the team is currently stacked at the shooting guard position with Kobe Bryant, Xavier Henry, Nick Young and rookie Jordan Clarkson all able to play the position.

The Lakers are expected to make a couple of more signings with training camp nearing.
