LOS ANGELES — In wake of losing Wayne Ellington for the final eight games of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday afternoon signed guard Dwight Buycks to a 10-day contract.

The 26-year-old played in the NBA D-League as a member of the Oklahoma City blue, where he averaged 18.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 6.2 assists for the Oklahoma City Blue. He undrafted out of Marquette in the 2011 NBA draft, he played professionally over the last four years in the NBA, D-League and overseas.

The 26-year-old played 14 games last year with the Toronto Raptors, where he averaged 3.1 points, 1.6 rebounds and 10.4 minutes. This season he began playing in the Spanish ACB league with Valencia, and followed it by signing with the Tianjin in China.

Lakers head coach Byron Scott said that Buycks would likely play in Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers because he wants to see him in practice first, but could be put into action if the guards on team get into foul trouble against the Trail Blazers.

Scott also stated that he didn’t have much knowledge about the type of player Buycks is but expects to play him in more of a combo guard role.

“I asked my son about him as he saw him play a bunch of D-league games,” Scott said. “He said that he is a very solid basketball player, doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, defends pretty well, can make open shots, and does a good job running the team.”

Ellington was officially declared out for the remainder of the season on Thursday afternoon after an MRI confirmed that he had a grade 1 separated right shoulder. The injury occurred in the final minutes of Wednesday’s 113-92 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans when he collided with Pelicans’ guard Toney Douglas
