Since New Orleans Pelicans star forward Anthony Davis made the decision to switch agents to hiring Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, it has seemingly put the Los Angeles Lakers as a possible trade destination.
At the same token, Davis could be up for a supermax contract next offseason with the Pelicans, which is something that the Lakers will be among the several teams in the league to keep on that situation, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.
The speculation isn’t expected to cool down, with Davis recently hiring Rich Paul of Klutch Sports — the same agent who reps LeBron James — to represent him. In the summer, the Lakers will be extremely aggressive in their pursuit of high-caliber stars to pair with James in the free-agent and trade markets.
Boston, Golden State, New York and the Los Angeles Clippers will also be some of the teams monitoring Davis’ situation, sources told Yahoo Sports.
It is no secret that the Lakers are looking for another star player to pair with LeBron James after this season. There has been chatter about them first venturing into free agency with their eyes set on finding that, but the trade market may also become a feasible option.
This alone throws Davis into the conversation beyond just his connection to James with the decision to have his close friend Paul represent him. There is more to that dynamic as next offseason could be the first time that he makes it clear to the Pelicans that he may not be interested in inking a new deal, which would put him presumably on the trade market.
There is certainly much that could change from now until then, but it is clear that the Lakers will be in the picture in keeping their tabs on how that situation unfolds with the Pelicans.
