Lakers add center Tarik Black off waivers

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday Afternoon claimed rookie center Tarik Black off waiver.

In direct correlation to the move the team waived veteran forward Xavier Henry to make room for Black. Henry was declared out for the year after he ruptured his left Achilles tendon in practice on Nov. 24. He had just nine appearances this season averaging 2.2 points on .231 field goal percentage in 9.6 minutes per game.

Black was not selected in the 2014 draft, and appeared in 25 games for the Houston Rockets this season, including 12 starts, averaging 4.2 points on 54.2 percent shooting along with 5.1 rebounds in 15.7 minutes per game. Black was waived by the Rockets on Friday to make room for Josh Smith.

Head coach Byron Scott stated prior to Sunday’s game against the Phoenix Suns that the 23-year-old brings much-needed toughness and athleticism to his team’s frontcourt.

“(He is) big, physical, strong, and very intelligent,” Scott said. ” (I’d) love to see him get here as quick as possible so we can get him in action on the practice court and just go from there.”

Black is expected to take his physical Monday, and could possibly be in uniform for the Lakers’ tilt on the road against the Denver Nuggets on Dec. 30.
