The Los Angeles Rams released a depth chart earlier this week that listed No. 1 overall draft pick Jared Goff as the third-string quarterback, and head coach Jeff Fisher said the rookie quarterback could be inactive for the first regular season game, according to ESPN.
Therefore, the Rams will start Case Keenum at quarterback and Sean Mannion will back him up. Fisher said the organization could switch Mannion and Goff next week. The two should split scout team reps as the season progresses.
NFL teams rarely carry three quarterbacks on the active gameday roster because of the demand for special teams players. Hence, the Rams head coach said punter Johnny Hekker will be the team’s third quarterback for an emergency.
Either way, Goff is going to be a great player and the organization will not rush him. Fisher said he is please with Goff’s progress after the preseason.
Also, Fisher said Goff is still the franchise quarterback. The rookie finished the preseason completing 22 of 49 passes for 232 yars, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.
The Rams play their regular season opener versus the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 12.
