The Sacramento Kings hired Dave Joerger to be their next head coach on Monday afternoon, according to

The Kings have reportedly signed Joerger to a four-year, $16 million deal with a team option for the fourth year of the contract. He is the franchise’s ninth head coach since the 2006-07 season, which is the most in the league over that span.

“I am thrilled to welcome Dave to the Sacramento Kings,” said general manager Vlade Divac. “He is a strong and passionate leader with a proven track record of producing results. Dave shares our focus on creating a long-term culture of winning and I look forward to a bright future ahead for the Kings with his leadership on the court.”

Joerger was the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, where he accumulated a 147-99 regular-season record (.598) and led the team to the playoffs in each season. He did arguably his best coaching this past season leading the Grizzlies to the playoffs as the seventh seed with a 42-40 record despite missing Marc Gasol and Mike Conley for long stretches of the year.

However, there was a developing divide between Joerger and the front office that only worsened as the season wore on. The organization was also getting the building perception that Joerger didn’t have much interest to continue coaching the team. This led to the decision to part ways with him on Saturday even though he still had one more guaranteed season left on his contract.

Joerger will effectively replace George Karl, who had a 44-68 record in just over a season as the Kings’ head coach. Sacramento underachieved with Karl at the helm finishing with a 33-49 record this past season, which marked the 10th consecutive year missing the playoffs.

Prior to hiring Joerger, the Kings had conducted a vast head coaching search interviewing several candidates such as Sam Mitchell, Vinny Del Negro, Mike Woodson, David Blatt, Mark Jackson, Jeff Hornacek and Nate McMillan.
