Farmers Insurance Open, Day 1 Results: Scott Brown leads at 6-under, Jason Day struggles

Rod Morri/

Thursday marked the opening day of the Farmers Insurance Open that took place at the beautiful Torrey Pines golf course. The four day tournament was headlined by Jason Day, Phil Mickelson, Hideki Matsuyama, and others.

The weather was immaculate and couldn’t have been anymore perfect for the opening day. Relatively unknown Scott Brown took advantage of the perfect conditions. He is the leader of the board after one day of play. Brown finished six under par and also recorded three consecutive birdies. He looked absolutely dominant and should look to maintain his lead.

On the other hand, last years winner Day struggled for the most part finishing even. He also, recorded three consecutive birdies, but the four total bogeys ended up hurting his total. But today is another great day it will remain to be seen if he can bounce back from a lackluster performance.

As for Mickelson he also started poorly but was able to regain momentum and finish strong. He finished the day three under par and looks to continue his success.

Matsuyama, played well but the few missed opportunities left something to be desired. He concluded day one, four under par but the two bogeys has left a smudge on his performance.

Outside of Brown, most of the top names struggled with consistency but showed great resilience.
