The Pro Bowl seems to be more a hindrance than a free vacation if you ask the San Francisco 49ers.
Ahmad Brooks will sit out the 2014 All-Star exhibition along with Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Justin Smith, Joe Staley, Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman and Mike Iupati according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. Brooks’ choice means that every San Francisco player voted in will miss the January 26 contest. Gore, Davis, Smith, Staley and Willis bowed out for personal reasons while Bowman and Iupati are significantly injured.
The 49ers did save face with the late Tuesday announcement that Eric Reid will participate in the Pro Bowl as an alternate. Reid was more than worthy starting every game while producing 73 tackles, 12 pass deflections and 4 interceptions. The All-Rookie selection made many forget about All-Pro Dashon Goldson who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2013 offseason.
Still, 49ers fans must be disappointed with this cheap consolation prize after failing to reach Super Bowl XLVIII. Aside from Reid, the honored San Francisco stars are only making their dreaded offseason even longer.
