The Seattle Sounders FC announced the appointment of Garth Lagerwey as the team’s General Manager and President of Soccer. He replaces Adrian Hanauer, who had a dual role as the Sounders’ GM and co-owner.
In a teleconference held on Tuesday afternoon, Hanauer said his intention was never to be Seattle’s GM for seven years. With Lagerwey’s contract expiring at Real Salt Lake, the timing was right for Hanauer to refocus his energies as an owner.
“I always said that if the best General Manager was available, I would hire that person to replace me. I believe that Garth is that man,” Hanauer said. “This decision will allow me to focus more time on strategy surrounding the long-term future of our club.”
Lagerwey spent the previous seven seasons with Real Salt Lake as their GM and Senior VP of Soccer Operations. In the press conference, he noted the challenge and excitement of continuing to build on a 40-year soccer tradition in Seattle.
Below is an edited audio version of their call with media members. Hanauer kicked off the proceedings and Lagerwey responded to questions starting at the 1:30 mark.
