The Los Angeles Lakers have generated a significant amount of buzz around the organization this offseason that has been fueled by their busy free agency that was headlined by the addition of LeBron James.
This has put forth some high expectations about what the 2018-19 season could entail for the Lakers that may well see them compete in the playoffs. However, this has fallen short of them being considered legitimate championship contenders with ESPN projected just a five percent chance of them winning the NBA title.
The Los Angeles Lakers, with James at the helm, have a 5 percent chance of representing the West in the NBA Finals this season. That might not sound like a ton, but it’s their best chance to pull off the feat according to preseason BPI since the 2011-12 season. And James’ move has sprung opportunity in the East, while the West has become more crowded.
The Golden State Warriors were the clear frontrunners in that projection with their talented roster that has only improved with the addition of All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins this offseason. Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics are the clear favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference.
At this juncture, it is hard to predict what the Lakers will do with their roster that has yet to play an official game yet. The addition of James is certainly a step in the right direction, but there are plenty of questions that must be answered across the rest of the roster. Much of that has to do with how the young core will respond and improve this upcoming season with Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo Ball, and Josh Hart having another offseason under their belts to improve their individual games and bodies.
Meanwhile, the offseason additions of Rajon Rondo, JaVale McGee, Lance Stephenson, and Michael Beasley will all factor into the equation. Regardless of the odds currently set ahead, it should be an entertaining season for the Lakers with their revamped roster led by James.
