In the months heading into the 2018-19 season, Los Angeles Lakers big splash acquisition of All-Star forward LeBron James is currently the betting favorite to win the MVP award.
However, there is was some notable odds well below that as his new teammate second-year forward Kyle Kuzma is projected to have the same betting odds to win the prestigious honor as Detroit Pistons All-Star forward Blake Griffin, according to Eric Rosales of Sports Betting Dime.
Kuzma is coming off a highly impressive rookie campaign where he averaged 16.1 points on 45 percent shooting from the field and 36.6 percent from 3-point range along with 6.3 rebounds per game. He had also became the first rookie in NBA history with at least 1,200 points, 450 rebounds, and 150 made 3-pointers. Kuzma also became set the franchise record with 159 made 3-pointers while becoming the first Lakers rookie to score 25-plus points in three straight games since Jerry West in 1960-61. All of this helped him earned All-Rookie First-Team honors.
Although he is a long shot to earn the award, the fact that he shares the same odds as Griffin speaks to the caliber of player he has quickly become. He has shown to be a capable scorer that can score in an array of ways that may just be tapping the potential that he has on the court. Meanwhile, Griffin has established himself as one of the premier big men in the league when healthy.
During his tenure with the L.A. Clippers, he had one serious run toward earning the MVP when he was able to help lead the team to a 50-win season with All-Star point guard Chris Paul out of the mix due to injury. He could have a chance to put together a strong campaign in his first full year with the Pistons next season. Nonetheless, this is quite an interesting situation given that Kuzma is only heading into his second year in the league.
