Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler suffered a broken hand in the team’s Week 15 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, but that won’t keep the undrafted rookie out of action for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.
According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles times, Ekeler made it through practice with a cast weighing over a pound on his fractured left hand and was still experiencing pain.
“It’s not light, and it’s not comfortable,” Ekeler said via the Los Angeles Times. “But you gotta do what you gotta do.”
What Ekeler and the Chargers have to do is find a way to win their last two games of the season in order to have a chance to make the postseason. After a tumultuous 0-4 start, the Bolts rallied to 7-6 and an AFC West division lead before suffering a lopsided 30-13 loss at the hands of their division rivals.
In addition to Ekeler’s injury, the Chargers were dealt another blow as tight end Hunter Henry was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Tuesday. Both young players were key cogs in the Chargers’ third-ranked passing offense. Ekeler has emerged as a dual-threat back with the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield as he’s amassed 539 yards from scrimmage as a change-of-pace back behind starter Melvin Gordon.
