Chargers rookie receiver Mike Williams could return from a back injury as soon as October.

Los Angeles is eyeing an October return for their No. 7 overall pick, according to NFL.com. Williams suffered a herniated disk in his back this spring but he is making solid progress with rest and rehab.

The Chargers are being cautious with the Clemson product. Thus, the plan is to let Williams start practicing in September before appearing in an October game. Barring any setbacks, that would make Williams available for most of the season.

A decision has not been made on Williams joining the Physically Unable to Perform List. That could change when roster decisions are made on Sept. 2.

Initial reports that Williams could need season-ending surgery. It was believed that Williams would join the PUP list.

The injury held him out of May’s rookie minicamp in San Diego. However, he reportedly responded well to an epideral shot.

On Aug. 9, another NFL report said that Williams had begun running again. Head coach Anthony Lynn said Williams was doing well and the team wanted him to keep progressing.

Williams registered 2,727 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns over four seasons at Clemson. If he is healthy, Williams is expected to be in the mix for a starting wide receiver position.

Los Angeles’ next preseason game is No. 20 versus the New Orleans Saints.
