The Los Angeles Lakers on Monday afternoon announced that team president of basketball operations Magic Johnson and general manager Rob Pelinka will represent the team next month at the NBA Draft lottery on May 16.

Johnson will be responsible for handling the television part of the event where the draft order is revealed. Meanwhile, Pelinka will be in the closed room where the lottery ball process will take place.

Los Angeles possesses a 46.9 percent chance of retaining their top-three protected first round pick. This is spread out with a 15.6 percent chance of that being the first overall selection, 15.7 percent for the second spot, and 15.7 percent for the third pick.

If the selection were to fall outside the top three spots in the draft order then it would go to the Philadelphia 76ers, who acquired the pick from the Phoenix Suns. It was originally sent to Phoenix as part of the July 2012 sign-and-trade deal that brought Steve Nash to Los Angeles. If the pick is retained, then the 76ers will instead get the Lakers’ 2018 first-round selection.

The fate of their top-three protected pick also has an effect on their 2019 first-rounder because if this year’s selection is lost to Philadelphia then Orlando receives that selection instead of getting a pair of second-round picks. This stipulation was brought about by the trade that brought Dwight Howard to the Lakers back in August 2012.
