Only a week after designating corner Trumaine Johnson as their franchise player, it appears the Los Angeles Rams are shopping the defender on the trade market.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Rams are discussing a Johnson trade with several teams. Rapoport said that the Rams are weighing their options for Johnson, as they would be able to get a significant draft-pick haul.
The #Rams are in discussions with several teams about potentially trading franchised CB Trumaine Johnson, per teams involved. Big domino.

A trade makes sense considering it is unknown how Johnson fits in the Rams’ defense under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Rapoport named the Cleveland Browns as the team to watch as former Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams took over the same position there.
Johnson is set to make $16.7 million under the franchise tender as this is his second consecutive year receiving the designation. That could also make Johnson the highest paid corner because
That could also make Johnson the highest paid corner because L.A. basically could not afford him to leave, according to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez. He is the first corner to get franchised twice in a row since Charles Woodson in 2004-05, per Gonzalez.
Gonzalez lists the Rams’ many roster needs and a lack of a first round pick as reasons for the Rams to trade Johnson. However, he also cites a deep cornerback class in the NFL Draft and free agency as reasons the Rams may not find their desired value for Johnson. Plus, the Rams have barely any depth behind the Johnson.
Otherwise, Gonzalez lists the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Tennessee Titans, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and Green Bay Packers as teams that make sense for Johnson.
Stay posted to see if Los Angeles can move Johnson. They have about $20 million in cap space with Johnson franchised as they head into the official opening of free agency on March 9.
