Carr can become a free agent after the 2017 season, and he addressed contract negotiations on “The Heard” earlier this week.
First, Carr credited the guys on his team for his success.
“I’ll never be sitting here saying I’m better than I am or anything like that because I know that I’m nothing without those guys,” Carr said to Cowherd.
Carr also said he still wears clothes from college or free team apparrel in another Raiders Wire article. These quotes show the quarterback’s humility.
On the other hand, Carr said he has to think about his family and the causes that he supports during salary negotiations. Carr said he is motivated by his boys, Haiti and the churches that he supports.
Hence, Carr could chase top-5 quarterback money, rather than a hometown discount.
Either way, extending Carr will be a priority for general manager Reggie McKenzie.
“The good thing is we do have time, but I’m not the type to wait until the last minute.” McKenzie said via NBC Bay Area. “They [Carr and edge Khalil Mack] are true Raiders and I want to make sure we do the best that we can to make sure that they stay Raiders.”
McKenzie and the Raiders have $46.5 million in cap space available this offseason. However, that money will also have to go to some of the Raiders’ 13 pending free agents this season and the new crop of NFL Draft picks.
Plus, edge Khalil Mack could also become a free agent after next year. His extension is also a priority. However, Oakland has a fifth-year option on Mack due to his status as a 2014 first-round pick.
Carr was a second-round selection in 2014 so the Raiders do not have that luxury with the quarterback.
Nonetheless, the fibula injury that Carr suffered at the end of the season will not impact contract talks, per NBC Bay Area.
It remains to be seen if Carr will give the Silver and Black a discount when he finally does get a contract extension.
