On the day that the Chargers announced relocation to Los Angeles, the L.A. Rams announced the hiring of their new head coach Sean McVay.

McVay is the youngest head coach in modern NFL history, per The 30-year-old coach is eight months younger than Lane Kiffin was when he was hired by the Oakland Raiders in 2007.

He spent the last three seasons as offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins. With the Redskins, McVay helped the unit move from the No. 25 ranked unit in yards per game in 2014 to the No. 10 ranked unit in 2016.

The Rams fired head coach Jeff Fisher with three games left in the 2016 season, after a 4-9 start. Last season, L.A. ranked in the bottom of the league for yards per game and points per game.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke said it was a great day to welcome McVay as their new head coach. Kroenke said he was impressed by McVay’s accomplishments in less than a decade of NFL experience.

“We are confident in his vision to make this team a consistent winner and we will all continue to work together to achieve our ultimate goal — bringing a Rams Super Bowl championship home to Los Angeles,” Kroenke said in a statement per the L.A. Times.

L.A. had one of the youngest teams in the league last season. Defensive end William Hayes, 31, is older than McVay.

Before hiring McVay, the L.A. Times reported that the Rams interviewed eight candidates. McVay interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday, before having his second interview with the Rams on Wednesday.

The Rams new coach played college football at Miami (Ohio). He got his coaching start with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008, per the L.A. Times.

McVay said he was incredibly honored by the opportunity in a statement.

“We are committed to building a championship-caliber team, and I’m excited to start that process and make our fans proud,” McVay said in a statement.

Further, the Rams hired Wade Phillips as the team’s defensive coordinator, according to the same report. Phillips, 69, is also a former NFL head coach. He helped the Denver Broncos win Super Bowl 50 last February.

The Rams have not had a winning season since 2003, and they have not made the playoffs since 2004.

McVay and Phillips will hope to reverse that.
