Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout was named the AL MVP on Thursday night by Baseball Writers Association of America.
It marks the second time in his career that he has captured the prestigious award along with making him the first player in league history to finish in the top two in the voting in his first five full seasons. He is also the first player to do accomplish that feat over a five-year span since former San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds.

Trout is also the sixth player to win two MVPs prior to the age of 26 and became the first player to win the award from a team that missed the playoffs since Alex Rodriguez did so with the Texas Rangers in 2003. He also became the 15th multiple winner in the AL joining the likes of Rodriguez, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Cal Ripken Jr. Frank Thomas, and Miguel Cabrera.
Despite the fact that the Angels finished with a 74-88 record that put them 21 games out of first place in the AL West, Trout had another impressive campaign leading the majors in runs scored (123), walks (116), on-base percentage (.441) and WAR (10.6). He was second in the AL in OPS (.991) and finished tied for second in steals (30). Trout was also fifth in the AL in batting averaging (.315), fourth in slugging percentage (.550), and first in runs created (138.5).
“Really surprised,” he said on a conference call with reporters, according to Baseballamerica.com. “It’s surreal. Just a little bit ago, I was a little kid in high school, and now I have a chance to win a second MVP. It’s unbelievable.”
Trout’s second AL MVP award is just the fourth in franchise history along with Don Baylor (1979) and Vladimir Guerrero (2004).
