Raiders re-sign DE Aldon Smith

The Oakland Raiders have re-signed free agent defensive end Aldon Smith to a two-year deal reported by Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports to be worth up to $19.5 million with incentive clauses.

Smith is currently serving a one-year suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on substance abuse, and won’t be eligible to return to the team until November. But, if and when Smith does return, the Raiders will boast a strong edge pass rush with Smith joining All-Pro Khalil Mack and recent free agent acquisition Bruce Irvin.

Smith was waived during training camp last year by the San Francisco 49ers, the team that selected Smith with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. The Raiders picked up Smith just before the first game of the season, and in nine games – including seven starts – Smith recorded 3.5 sacks.

Smith cannot apply for reinstatement by the league until 60 prior to his suspension expiring, when the NFL will then review his case. Until then, Smith must comply with the terms of the suspension or risk his reinstatement being denied and banned for an even longer term.
