LSU star Ben Simmons ineligible for Wooden Award

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

Potential 2016 NBA Draft prospect and LSU big man Ben Simmons is ineligible for a Wooden Award due to a possible academic issue, according to an ESPN report.

Simmons was informed that he did not meet one of the requirements for the award. Their were no specifics given about Simmons’ missing requirement by the Wooden Committee or LSU Athletics, however, an ESPN report said it was academic.

He averages almost 20 points, 12 rebounds  and five assists for LSU. He sat the first half of the Feb. 20 game versus Tennessee for an academic issue.

Simmons smiled and said he only cares about winning, when he was told about being excluded from the finalists list.

He was on a previous Feb. 10 list of 20 Wooden Award candidates. The finalists were announced this past weekend. They include:

Brice Johnson, North Carolina
Buddy Hield, Oklahoma
Denzel Valentine, Michigan State
Georges Niang, Iowa State
Grayson Allen, Duke
Jakob Poeltl, Utah
Jarrod Uthoff, Iowa
Josh Hart, Villanova
Kay Felder, Oakland
Kris Dunn, Providence
Malcolm Brogdon, Virginia
Melo Trimble, Maryland
Perry Ellis, Kansas
Tyler Ulis, Kentucky
Yogi Ferrell, Indiana

Requirements for the Wooden Award include a 2.0 grade point average at the university, excelling on offense and defense, strong character and a few other standards.

The winner will be announced April 8, however Simmons is not eligible to win the award.
