49ers sign Garrett Celek to four year extension

The San Francisco 49ers are keeping one of their own. On Tuesday the team announced that they had reached a four year extension with tight end Garrett Celek. The tight end, who came into the league in 2012, signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan St. Known more of as a blocking tight end with the capability of being a receiving threat, Celek had played more of a complementary role to former teammate Vernon Davis, but when Davis was traded to Denver during the season, Celek saw a spike in production as he reached career highs in receiving catches (19), yards (186), and touchdowns (3).

While those numbers may seem small, Celek’s real production rests in his blocking, just like his brother Brent, who was coached by the now former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. The familiarity that Kelly has with the Celek family may have helped play a small role in the extension, but there is no mistaken that Garrett has been an integral part of the 49ers organization through his first four years.

Congratulations to Garrett on the new deal!
