SEATTLE  —  Seattle Sounders FC started their 2016 season with a 2-2 draw against Club America in the first leg of their CONCACAF quarterfinal Champions League clash.

Clint Dempsey tallied both Seattle goals on set pieces. Dempsey’s free kick found the right corner of the net in the 44th minute. Carlos Quintero responded a minute later to tie the match at 1-1.

The Sounders regained the lead when Andreas Ivanschitz found Dempsey open in the back post seven minutes into the second half. His header temporarily gave the home side a 2-1 edge.

With 20 minutes left in regulation time, Oribe Peralta evaded central defenders Chad Marshall and Brad Evans to draw the match even 2-2.

The home team’s defense struggled to contain Club America’s forwards in the offensive third of the pitch. Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei failed to make a critical save and hold a first half lead on Quintero’s goal.

In Monday’s media day interviews, head coach Sigi Schmid and Evans noted a shutout was critical against Club America. The two away goals and the raucous atmosphere in Mexico City makes the Sounders’ task to advance a difficult one.

Below are the highlights from the game:

The sides conclude their two-match series on March 2 in Estadio Azteca.
