NBA buyout season begins for veterans

After the NBA trade deadline passed this week, several teams wasted no time shedding the salaries of unwanted players.

Any of the players waived our bought-out before the March 1 deadline are playoff eligible.

The Boston Celtics agreed to a buy-out of David Lee after trading for him over the offseason. Lee is already rumored to sign with the Dallas Mavericks.

Center Anderson Varajao was waived by the Portland Trailblazers immediately after being traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

2006 No. 1 overall pick Andrea Bargnani also received a buyout from the Brooklyn Nets, despite signing a two-year veteran’s minimum contract this past offseason.

The Denver Nuggets waived forwards Steve Novak and J.J. Hickson.

The Sacramento Kings are also expected to buyout forward Caron Butler. Butler signed with the Kings this offseason as well.

It will be interesting to see if a playoff team takes a gamble on any of the veterans mentioned above. It will also be interesting to see if any of the veterans can still contribute to a quality NBA team.

More veterans could also be looking for new teams within the coming days.
