Sacramento Kings’ head coach George Karl avoids getting axed

Eric Gay/ Associated Press

The Sacramento Kings’ head coach George Karl avoided being cut after having a meeting with general manager Vlade Divac. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, Karl pleaded his case to Divac, to be retained and assured him that changes would be made to improve the teams play. That included changing the teams defensive scheme, practice policies, and other standards that has led to the disconnect of the team.

Karl is by no means in the clear yet. It is still very likely that he could be axed at the end of the season depending on how the team finishes. Karl will at the very least need to finish with a winning record and also make the last playoff spot, to even have a chance to be retained.

The next problem that arises is that Karl has approximately $10 million in guaranteed money left on his four-year $15 million contract that he signed in 2015.

The Kings’ brass will have a lot to think about this offseason and finding a new coach may be at the top of the list.
