The Oakland Raiders are still without an NFL home in 2016 and beyond, and the city of Las Vegas appears to be on the short list of potential suitors, according to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report.
The report states the rumblings are not just a farce, but instead are ‘very real.’ This news comes despite the difficult logistics associated with having a professional sports team in the gambling capital of the Western Hemisphere.
UNLV president Len Jessup sent the wheels of this story in motion when he announced the university was behind a project to build a state-of-the-art special events center and stadium on land it had recently purchased on 42 acres of land on Tropicana Avenue, near the heart of the famous Las Vegas Strip.
Such a venue would be a major attraction, and unprecedented, but there are clear roadblocks to making it actually come to fruition.
The NFL is big business, and the potential downfalls of being associated with gambling and alleged scandals could mar the league. Even worse is the potential for lost revenue among league owners, who would have to vote a two-thirds majority in order to approve such a move.
Further substantiating the speculation is the fact that Raiders owner Mark Davis chose to abstain from confirming or denying the report, which is in so many words an admission of involvement by today’s news standards.
As always, the news regarding the Los Angeles Rams-San Diego Chargers-Raiders saga just got even more interesting. The Raiders would be best served to wait until the Chargers make a move either to LA or return to San Diego before deciding on a course of action.
If the Chargers bolt up Interstate 5 and join forces with the rams in the massive LA market, then San Diego could also be a location Davis would covet. There are plenty of fans rooting for the Silver and Black in America’s Finest City.
