For the first time in nearly 30 years, University of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh will face off against The Ohio State University in what is known as “The Game.” Saturday, Nov. 28, however, marks the first time that Harbaugh will try to lead the Michigan Wolverines to victory from the sideline instead of on the field.
In a fashion similar to Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, Harbaugh’s presence at Michigan has turned the culture around in just his first year overseeing the football program. What Meyer did in Columbus, Ohio in 2012 is what Harbaugh is doing in Ann Arbor, Mich. in 2015. As a result, the latest Michigan-Ohio State rivalry game brings with it more anticipation than it’s seen in recent years.
As a first-year head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2012, Meyer coached against and defeated the Wolverines in The Game. The final score was 26-21. Meyer also had the home-field advantage during that matchup.
First-year head coach Harbaugh is the one with the home-field advantage this time around. With it, he will attempt to do what Meyer was able to do three years ago.
A Michigan man since his playing days, Harbaugh knows better than most what it means to the maize-and-blue community to get a win over its most hated Big Ten foe. During the mid-1980s, he was the full-time starter at quarterback for the Wolverines; he played and beat the Buckeyes twice during that time.
Harbaugh and the Wolverines will be one step closer to going to the Big Ten title game if they secure a victory on Saturday; if they beat Ohio State, all they would need is a loss by the Michigan State Spartans to the Penn State Nittany Lions, a game that is also being played on Saturday.
The Wolverines are ranked No. 10 in the nation, according to the College Football Playoff rankings; the Buckeyes are ranked No. 8. The Game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. EST in Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
Jim Harbaugh was born on Dec. 23, 1963 in Toledo, Ohio. He attended Palo Alto High School in Palo Alto, Calif. As a starting quarterback at Michigan, he finished third in the voting for the Heisman Trophy in 1986. He is 51 years old.
