The Detroit Tigers will host the Los Angeles Angels for a three-game home series beginning Tuesday night at Comerica Park. These two power hitting teams will try to take the series win as each team has slowly been on the decline this season in their divisions while trying to stay in postseason contention.
The Angels, who were dominating their division at the beginning of the season, are currently five games back behind the American League West leaders the Houston Astros. The Halos are trying to regain momentum as they try to stay in contention to win the AL Wild Card race.
This series against the Tigers is crucial as the Angels have lost seven of their last ten games. The team will try to take advantage of the Tigers as they surprisingly continue to be over powered by seemingly every division in the league.
The Tigers, who are also slowly declining in their division, are currently 17 games back behind the Kansas City Royals who are the American League Central division leaders. The inconsistency in the bullpen in Detroit is largely to blame for the majority of their losses this season.
The Tigers were just swept at home by the Texas Rangers and had a tragic loss last night against the Cincinnati Reds as their bullpen failed them once again.
On the hill
Starting pitcher Buck Farmer and three relief pitchers Al Alburquerque, Tom Gorzelanny and Neftali Feliz allowed a 10 run sixth inning last night. The Reds were down by five runs one point and completely shook up them team and had a final victory of 12-5 in Cincinnati ending a nine game losing streak. The fact that 10 runs were scored and four different pitchers were used in one inning is devastating for a team who was formally playoff regulars and that seems to no longer be the case.
It seems as if both teams have run out of gas this season. Both the Angels and the Tigers have some of the best hitters in all of baseball including Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and J.D. Martinez who are all tied with 33 homeruns each. But this hasn’t been enough for either team to rack up the wins and stay afloat in their divisions.
Both teams continue to hang around the .500 mark. In their respective divisions, that’s not good enough to get anywhere near the playoffs.
Players to watch
Players to be on the lookout for this series include power hitters Albert Pujols and Martinez. Pujols continues to be hot and knock out homerun after homerun and reminds us every game why he makes the big bucks. Pujols is tied with Trout and Martinez who are some the best and youngest players in the league.
Martinez is one of those players for the Tigers that continues to bring hope back to Detroit. He not only has 33 homeruns, but he also has 84 RBIs with an OBP of .350. Martinez continues to be the star of many series this season and Tigers fans seem to enjoy their rising star. Each team can easily sweep each other in this series but it will be interesting to see who shows up to win tonight in Big D.
The Angels can make up ground in the division by taking games from the Tigers, who are en route to missing the playoffs for the first time in awhile.
