Matt Kemp hitting leadoff as Padres shake things up vs. Giants

In a move to shake up the line up, the San Diego Padres have switched Matt Kemp to hit leadoff on Wednesday against the San Fransisco Giants.

Manager Pat Murphy, who is 3-4 since taking over as manager, is experimenting with the lineup in an attempt to revitalize the offense.

Kemp is currently hitting .243 with 69 hits, four home runs and 36 RBI’s. He usually hits in the third or fourth spot, but has not hit with great power this season as indicated by his .349 slugging percentage, which is roughly 150 points lower than the previous season.

This may be a good move for San Diego as the expectation for the hitter will change. Kemp can now concentrate on getting on base instead of trying to hit it out of the park.

The leadoff spot is typically not known for power hitters, but the Los Angeles Dodgers seemed to prove that theory wrong after moving Joc Pedersen to lead off, as he has hit 16 home runs since the shift.

If the lineup change works, it may not only bring more confidence to Kemp, but also life to the rest of the team.
