San Francisco 49ers free agent All-Pro safety Dashon Goldson will be courted by several teams, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions being the favorites, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter Monday night. The 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles are other teams in the running for Goldson.
One of the biggest prizes of free agency this year, Goldson, 28, was not offered a franchise tag this offseason, allowing him to test the free agent market and potentially end up with another team. A Pro Bowl selection in consecutive seasons, he finished last year with 69 tackles, three interceptions and a forced fumble.
Commanding a price tag at around the $8 million mark annually, the 49ers are behind the Buccaneers and Lions for Goldson’s services and have looked elsewhere for more affordable options at safety. Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed has been rumored to possibly end up in San Francisco, according to Albert Breer of NFL Network. Adding Reed would make a Goldson loss more tolerable.
After acquiring wide receiver Anquan Boldin and his $6 million salary in a trade with the Ravens on Monday for a sixth-round draft pick in this year’s draft, the 49ers will likely let Goldson walk away this offseason.
