MLB free agency 2013: 5 potential landing spots for Brian Wilson

Brian Wilson seems to be healthy after undergoing Tommy John surgery last April, but where will the All-Star closer land  in 2013 after the San Francisco Giants non-tendered him back in November?

 Though the right arm is still a concern, the 30-year-old right hander could provide some value to a contender in a niche role, though it’s hard to envision him commanding the $8.5M salary he earned last season. Still, he’s going to help someone, and here are five potential places  The Beard could end up playing in 2013: 

Could Brian Wilson call Chavez Ravine home in 2013?

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

As sad as it would be for Giants’ fans to see him go to their arch rival, it seems very possible that Wilson could be wearing blue this season. The Dodgers, with new ownership, have all the money necessary to add his services at whatever price the market demands.

Along with this, L.A. historically taken a liking to ex-Giants including Jason Schimdt, Jeff Kent, and most recently Juan Uribe. Furthermore, Brian Wilson already has a house in Los Angeles and has listed the Dodgers as his number two option.

2. New York Mets

The Mets recently worked out Wilson according to reports, and  are looking for some late-inning options. After the whole Billy Wagner project didn’t work, they need help. They recently signed Frank Francisco as their closer, however, it’s uncertain whether or not they  could have him serve another role with Wilson on board. The Big Apple would be a great fit for the big personality of a guy like Wilson though. 

3. Boston Red Sox

Boston seems to be just as interested as the Mets. The Red Sox don’t seem to have that ace like they used to. Brian Wilson would be a great fit and provide some depth and energy to a very average bullpen. Then again, who knows what Wilson will do after his surgery this last season and whether or not he can be close to the same pitcher he has been in years’ past. 

4. Chicago Cubs

Second year GM Theo Epstein may be looking to add a closer to his roster. Carlos Marmol has always been shaky, and Brian Wilson may just be a perfect fit for the Cubs. With Epstein looking to rebuild the Cubs after an awful year, don’t be surprised if he looks to spice things up by acquiring Wilson

5. San Francisco Giants

Although it may seem like Wilson is on the move, it’s not a certainty that he walks. If no team is willing to give Wilson what he from a salary standpoint, he may end back with the black and orange. No matter what happens, it will be very interesting to see how he performs in 2013.
